Life insurance plays a different role in retirement than it does during your working years, and most people never revisit this conversation as they age.
Term life insurance covers a specific period, 10, 20, or 30 years. If you die during the term, your beneficiaries receive the death benefit. If you outlive the term, the coverage ends and there is no payout. Term insurance is designed to replace income during the years when others depend on your earnings.
By retirement, if your kids are grown and self-supporting and your spouse has their own income sources and retirement assets, the original purpose of term insurance may no longer apply.
Permanent life insurance, meaning whole life or universal life, does not expire. It builds cash value over time and provides a death benefit regardless of when you die. It costs significantly more than term coverage but serves a different purpose: estate planning, legacy transfer, or funding long-term care through a hybrid policy.
The question to ask in retirement is whether you still have people who depend on your income and what role, if any, the death benefit plays in your estate plan. If the answer is neither, carrying a term premium you no longer need is just a cost.
