SCRIPT
In most households, one person handles the finances and the other has some involvement but is not the primary manager. That works fine while both are alive and healthy. It becomes a crisis when the managing spouse dies or becomes incapacitated.
The surviving spouse who never managed the accounts suddenly needs to know where everything is, what everything means, how to access it, who to call, what decisions need to be made, and how to evaluate whether the advice they are receiving is in their interest. They are navigating all of this while grieving.
This is not a small problem. It is one of the most consistently painful situations I see, and it is entirely preventable.
The fix is a shared understanding. Both spouses should know where all accounts are and how to access them. Both should know who your financial advisor is, who your estate planning attorney is, and who your accountant is. Both should know the location of your estate documents.
A simple financial inventory document listing every account, every policy, every advisor contact, stored somewhere both people know about, is not morbid. It is one of the most loving things you can create for your spouse.
