SCRIPT

Most people assume when someone dies, the money goes to the family quickly. Probate is why that assumption is wrong.

Probate is the court-supervised process of validating your will and distributing your assets. Every piece of property that goes through your will goes through probate. It is public record. Anyone can look up what you owned and who received it.

The timeline is typically 12 to 24 months depending on the state and the complexity of the estate. During that time your family may have limited access to the assets they need to cover expenses. And the cost, attorney fees, court fees, executor compensation, typically runs between 3 and 7 percent of the estate value before your heirs receive a single dollar.

On a $600,000 estate that is $18,000 to $42,000 gone before anyone inherits anything.

A properly funded revocable living trust bypasses probate entirely. Assets in a trust transfer in weeks, not years, privately, without a court. The upfront cost of the trust is a fraction of the probate savings.

PRODUCTION NOTES

Steady, informative delivery. On screen graphic showing the probate cost math would work well as a visual hook.
