SCRIPT

A bond ladder is one of those tools that sounds complicated and turns out to be very simple once someone explains it clearly.

You buy a set of bonds, each one maturing at a different point in time. Year one, year two, year three, out to whatever period you are planning for. Each year, one of those bonds matures and you receive the principal back plus the interest it earned. You can use that money as income, or you can roll it into a new bond at the end of the ladder to extend the runway.

The reason retirees use this is predictability. You know exactly when the money is coming and exactly how much. There is no guessing, no market timing, no dependence on a company's quarterly earnings. U.S. Treasury bonds backed by the federal government give you the highest certainty. Investment-grade corporate bonds give you more yield with modestly more credit risk.

A bond ladder works best as the middle layer of a retirement income plan: stable, scheduled income that sits between your cash buffer for immediate expenses and your long-term equity investments for growth.

PRODUCTION NOTES

Clear and accessible. The simplicity of the concept is the selling point. Deliver it like you are explaining it to a smart friend.
