SCRIPT

A 529 plan is a tax-advantaged savings account designed for education expenses. You contribute after-tax dollars, the money grows tax-free, and withdrawals are tax-free when used for qualified education expenses including tuition, room and board, books, and supplies.

Starting with the 2024 tax year, 529 accounts that have been open for at least 15 years can be rolled over to a Roth IRA for the same beneficiary, up to $35,000 lifetime. This change made 529 plans significantly more flexible because the risk of over-funding one is lower.

When does a 529 make sense from a retirement and estate planning perspective? If you have grandchildren and you have already maxed your own retirement contributions, a 529 can be a tax-efficient way to transfer wealth. Contributions to a 529 plan use your annual gift tax exclusion, and a special provision called superfunding allows you to front-load five years of gifts into a 529 in one year.

When it does not make sense: if you have not addressed your own retirement income security first, funding a grandchild's education at the expense of your own plan is the wrong order of operations.

PRODUCTION NOTES

Clean and educational. This one skews toward grandparents. The SECURE 2.0 Roth rollover provision is a genuinely newsworthy angle.
