SCRIPT

If you are over 70 and a half and you own a traditional IRA and you give to charity, you are almost certainly leaving money on the table every single year.

Here is what most people do. They take their required minimum distribution, pay income tax on it, and then write a check to their church or favorite nonprofit. Two separate transactions. The RMD hits their income, raises their MAGI, potentially increases their Medicare premiums, and makes more of their Social Security taxable. Then they write the check.

Here is what a QCD does instead. The money goes directly from the IRA to the charity. It counts as the RMD. It never appears on your tax return as income. Your MAGI stays lower. Your Medicare premiums may stay lower. More of your Social Security stays untaxed.

Same money. Same charity. Completely different tax outcome.

The IRS requires the transfer to go directly from the custodian to the charity. You cannot touch the money first. But if you call your IRA custodian and tell them to issue a check payable to your chosen charity, the mechanics are simple.

If you are currently writing personal checks to charity from money you already paid tax on, ask your advisor about QCDs. Link in my bio.

PRODUCTION NOTES

The contrast between the old way and the QCD is the entire script. Make that comparison vivid and concrete. This is a genuine tax improvement most people miss.
