SCRIPT

If someone is recommending an annuity to you, there is one question that will immediately tell you if the recommendation is worth taking seriously.

Ask this: what is the total all-in annual cost of this product, expressed as a percentage of account value, including every fee, every rider charge, and every mortality and expense fee?

A simple fixed annuity might cost you nothing annually beyond the opportunity cost of committing the money. A variable annuity with riders can cost 2.5 to 3.5 percent per year or higher. On a $300,000 annuity, that is $7,500 to $10,500 every year coming out of your account before you earn a single dollar of return.

If the person recommending it cannot give you a clear answer to that question, or if the answer is vague, that is information.

Get the total cost in writing. Understand what every rider does and what it costs. And compare the guaranteed outcome of the annuity to what you could accomplish by keeping the money in your own portfolio with a withdrawal strategy.

Sometimes the annuity is the right choice. But you should make that decision with full information.
