If you have cash sitting in a savings account earning 0.5 percent, you are losing purchasing power to inflation every single month.

A CD ladder is a way to capture significantly higher yields while keeping your money accessible on a rolling schedule. Here is how it works. You take a lump sum and split it into five equal portions. You put one portion in a one-year CD, one in a two-year, one in a three-year, one in a four-year, and one in a five-year CD.

Every year, one CD matures. You get the principal and interest back. You then reinvest it into a new five-year CD at whatever the current rate is. Over time you are always capturing the full rate available for five-year money, and you always have a CD coming due within the next 12 months if you need liquidity.

In 2025, five-year CD rates from reputable institutions are meaningfully higher than what most savings accounts pay. CDs are FDIC insured up to $250,000 per depositor per institution, so there is no credit risk within those limits.

This is one of the simplest and lowest-maintenance income tools available for retirees. It does not require market expertise and the returns are guaranteed.

PRODUCTION NOTES

Practical and approachable. The specific rate environment context is the hook. Deliver with energy, this is genuinely good news for savers.
