SCRIPT
One of the most common conversations I hear people say they need to have but have not had is the one with aging parents about their estate plan, their finances, and what happens when they are gone.
It feels uncomfortable because it touches on mortality, on money, and on family dynamics all at the same time. Most adult children avoid it until a health crisis forces it, at which point the conversation is harder and the stakes are higher.
Here is a way to open it that tends to work. Do not frame it as being about inheritance. Frame it as wanting to make sure you can help if something happens. The question is not what are you leaving me. It is what do I need to know to support you.
Specifically ask: do you have a will and a power of attorney in place? Do you have a financial advisor or estate planning attorney I should know about? Is there a document somewhere that lists your accounts and important contacts?
If your parents are resistant, share that you are working on your own plan right now and it prompted you to think about this. That removes the focus from them and makes it a shared conversation.
The goal is not to know every dollar. The goal is to know enough that you can actually help when the moment comes.

PRODUCTION NOTES
Warm, empathetic, practical. This content appeals to the adult children of the target demographic as well as the target demographic themselves. Highly shareable.
